What Does Net Zero Cost?
If your home is already very energy efficient and has a heat pump installed, then to go net zero you'd install about 10kW of solar panels. This will cost about $20k. You do need somewhere to install those solar panels, ideally on a south-facing pitched roof.
If, however, your home has poor insulation & old appliances, then you will need to install more solar panels to make up for the additional energy you're leaking. You might need as much as 20kW of solar panels ($40k). Also, to use the electrical energy associated with the solar panels you need an electric heater, and this means fitting a heat-pump. These start at about $10k installed.
The 2 examples above are for re-models, and whilst it's possible to retrofit a house to achieve net zero, the more logical application of the net zero concept is in new construction:
During the design of new construction, the house can be correctly oriented and designed with a south-facing pitched roof for solar panels, and a heat-pump, superior insulation & low-energy appliances can be specified. These choices often come with cost-increases of around $15k extra on the build budget. Once we add the $20k of solar panels, we have a total cost of +$35k for net zero, if the choice is made during design.
This blog post is the introduction to a series of 4 blog-posts in which we will explore the cost to build a net zero house. We will calculate the return-on-investment and explain the value of spending $35k to achieve net zero.
Remember that net zero means that you will never pay for heating, cooling, or electrical energy ever again, you've paid all your future energy bills up-front!
Here's what to expect in the coming weeks:
Part 1: What do you need to be net zero? (a net-metering connection...)
Part 2: What does it cost to be net zero?
Part 3: Does it make financial sense to go net zero?
Part 4: What is net zero carbon? (as opposed to net zero energy)
